Recognizing the Problem

Building a Corporate Strategy to Support Communities We Live and Work In

Numerous studies have confirmed that there is a causal relationship between increasing diversity within organizations and a company’s bottom line. For example, McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm reported that more than 300 companies in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom and Latin America that ranked highly in gender diversity were 21 percent more likely to turn a profit above the national average.

As a result, further studies, like LinkedIn’s 2018 Global Recruiting Trends report, found 78 percent of the US companies surveyed are focusing on diversity.

Understanding the Benefits of DE&I

1.     Diversity Improves Innovation

McKinsey and Company reported that ethnically and culturally diverse executive teams, for example, were 33 percent more likely to see better-than-average profits than less diverse competitors in their industry. This is because a diverse talent pool brings together the experiences, histories and personal experiences of individuals from different racial, ethnic, gender, geographic and ideological backgrounds. The entire group benefits by seeing problems and projects from a different perspective. As a result, new unique solutions, and strategies are more readily developed by inclusive engagement across industries.

2. Diversity Widens the talent pool. An organization known for its fair employment practices and appreciation for diverse talent is better able to attract a wider pool of qualified applicants,” Ng says.

3. Diversity Broadens marketing and customers. Companies employing workers who identify with a small portion of the market don’t have access to the experiences and insights of the entire marketplace. “A workplace with a diverse group of individuals from different backgrounds enables a company to more effectively market to a broader groups of consumers and tap into related business opportunities,” Ng says.

4. Diversity Enhances company reputation. “Business reputation flourishes when a company shows its commitment to diversity and inclusion,” Ng says. “It leads to more customers, increased profitability and opportunities for workers.”[1]

5. Diversity leads to increased customer satisfaction

The US is becoming a more diverse country. As a result, a company’s decision-making team has to be able to relate to its customers and clients. Diverse teams are more likely to relate to a particular audience’s wants, needs and pain points, creating greater opportunities to resonate with customers more readily.
