The Future of MWBEs Forum
The number of Minority - and Women Owned - Business Enterprises (MWBE) in our communities continues to grow. Over the last 10 years, MWBEs have accounted for more than 50% of the two million new businesses started in the United States, creating an astounding 4.7 million jobs. Today there are now more than four million MWBE companies with annual sales totaling close to $700 billion.
Even with such impressive numbers, MWBEs continue to face challenges and inequities. Recently, the Minority Business Development Agency noted in a report that while the number of MWBE firms has grown by 35%, the average revenue for those firms dropped by 16%. Further, while minorities make up about 32% of the U.S. population, minority business ownership represents only 18% of the total business population.
The numbers of minority-owned businesses are a source of optimism and hold promise for the future but much more still needs to be done to encourage and strengthen the minority business community. That's why ensuring that all MWBE businesses have access to capital, public & private contracts, technology, and professional networks needed for success remains a top priority. A diverse business landscape is one of the nation's greatest strengths, and minority/woman small-business ownership is essential to our nation's continued economic success and growth.
